Whether you need a product photo on a white background, a profile picture without the messy background, or a PNG with transparency for a design project — background removal used to require Photoshop or a paid service. Not anymore.
AI-powered background removal now runs directly in your browser, for free, in seconds.
The result is a transparent PNG ready to use in any design tool, presentation, or website.
No account. No watermark. No upload to a server. The AI model runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly.
imgshrnk uses ISNet (IS-Net: Importance-aware Selective Network), a state-of-the-art image segmentation model developed for precisely this task. It identifies the primary subject in an image — a person, product, animal, or object — and separates it cleanly from the background.
The model runs via ONNX Runtime compiled to WebAssembly. When you first visit the page, the neural network weights (~40 MB) load into your browser. After that, every removal job runs on your CPU locally. Nothing is sent to any server.
AI background removal works well on:

For most e-commerce, social, and design use cases, the results are clean and usable without manual editing.
You don't have to remove backgrounds one image at a time. imgshrnk supports batch processing — upload multiple images and the AI processes them all in sequence. Useful for:
Once you have a transparent PNG, common next steps:
Add a white background for e-commerce: Use imgshrnk's image editor or paste into a design tool. Most e-commerce platforms (Shopify, Amazon, Etsy) require product photos on white.
Resize for a platform: Use the image resizer to get exact pixel dimensions for Instagram, LinkedIn, or your CMS.
Add a watermark: If you're sharing creative work, the watermark tool lets you overlay text or a logo before downloading.
Compress the PNG: Transparent PNGs can be large. Run the result through the compressor to reduce file size before uploading to a website.
| Tool | Price | Privacy | Batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| imgshrnk | Free | Local, no upload | Yes |
| remove.bg | Free (low res) / Paid | Uploads to server | Paid only |
| Adobe Express | Paid subscription | Cloud | Yes |
| Canva | Paid (Pro) | Cloud | No |
The main tradeoff with server-based paid tools is resolution — remove.bg gives you a lower resolution result on the free tier and charges per image for full resolution. imgshrnk returns the original resolution for free.
Background removal tools see your photos. For product images, that's fine. For personal photos — family pictures, ID photos, sensitive documents — uploading to a third party is a real risk.
Since imgshrnk runs the AI model locally in your browser, your photos are never transmitted. The model processes your image in memory and hands you back the result. No server ever receives your file.
